Overflowing Reservoir of Inner Peace
I recollect a story that relays the essence of this topic. God disguised himself and decided to visit his children in the physical world to check on them. He first reached a very wealthy man, Raju's house and knocked on the door. Raju angrily opened the door, gave God a penny and asked him to never come back again. God remembered how this same man visited temple many times few years back and begged for wealth. Raju possessed every comfort, but was not happy in sharing it with others. The lord thought he had not seen a more poor man than the wealthy Raju. Next, God stopped at a poor man, Shyam's hut and knocked on the door. The poor man smilingly invited God home and requested him to have meal with his family. God was touched by Shayam's genuine love. He knew Shyam's house that night barely had any food. Shyam's wife started serving dinner to God with lot of affection, and she noticed that food in the pot kept increasing every time she served. She realized that this was no ordinary person, so she quickly informed Shyam about it. God revealed himself and blessed the couple that their food stores will always be overflowing. They will never go hungry again. Shyam and his wife thanked God and lived happily forever. Wouldn't we want to be blessed with a boon that our peace reservoirs are forever overflowing and never dry up? I received such a magical wand in the form of Brahma Kumaris knowledge, a wand that is slowly and steadily increasing my reservoir of inner peace. I have confidence that I will reach a stage in future where the reservoir of inner peace will consistently be overflowing.
What are few activities and habits that make us abundant in peace?
- Early Morning Meditation (between 2:00-5:00 am) helps in instilling peace. The pure vibrations of the atmosphere help us to experience the peace within easily. During the early hours most people are sleeping and not creating negative thoughts. The morning boost of peace makes it easier to remain peaceful through out the day
- Soul Empowering Reading: We can take further advantage of the mind that is ready to absorb early in the morning by reading something positive and empowering. The material that has been read will be absorbed deeply (not at surface where is is forgotten easily) if some time is taken to churn the knowledge. Think about situations and people where, how, and when the new ideas could be used. It is only when there is full clarity that we are able to use the theoretical knowledge in practical life. It is not about just reading and forgetting, but understanding and realizing it.
- Traffic Control of Mind: Take regular breaks to traffic control the mind by using any mobile app or alarm. It allows us to check if our thoughts have been peaceful, if there is anything that is causing us to become peaceless, and allows us to realign and reconnect with our peaceful self.
- Peaceful Cooking and Eating: Food has a big impact on our mind. It is important to eat food that not only benefits the body, but also the mind. Food cooked in a positive mood, clean environment, and eaten peacefully helps in making the mind peaceful.
- Track Progress by Writing a Journal: At the end of the day maintain a chart to note down the situations or moments where peace was maintained or lost. In the beginning, the aim can be to just note down three occasions when peace stayed versus got lost. This activity helps not only in keeping tracking of the progress, but also prevents us from making the same mistake in future.
- Meditation Before Sleeping: Before going to bed, spend few minutes in meditation so that mind gets back to its natural state. Unload all the burdens by thanking people, universe, and God. Pat your back, that you did a great job. The of areas of improvement noted in the chart will be resolved tomorrow. This practice makes us a conqueror of sleep. Even 5-6 hours of sleep will feel more rejuvenating than 8-10 hours because our mind was silent during the sleep. Body does not need 8-10 hours of sleep. It is the mind that requires the rest because it got tired carrying the burden of negative thoughts. The few minutes of meditation before going to bed allows us to unload the burdens, relax the mind, and that enables us to have a deep relaxing sleep.
We start creating peace through peaceful thoughts, words, and action when a deep realization hits us that we are the creators of peace. We stop waiting, wanting, and demanding peace from others. We might momentarily experience peace from outside, but those methods make us dependent. If we are dependent, then there is no way we can be overflowing with peace. We need a method that guarantees consistent peace for an extended period of time. Peace felt during early morning meditation is a good way to accumulate the first dollar in our peace account. We cannot sit in meditation the whole day, then how do we keep increasing it throughout the day? A major portion of our day is spent in doing karma and interacting with people. We need a method that allows us to accumulate peace during karma and in interaction with others. The trick I learnt was to maintain a noble intention of donating peace to every person I met. An aim that nobody goes without receiving a blessing of peace from me. It is a guarantee that unimaginable intensity of peace will be experienced by a person who maintains awareness of this aim and executes it.
I noticed many magical changes in my outlook when I paid attention and practiced the aim of giving peace to every being. My focus changed from my problems to difficulties faced by others. I started thinking less about what was lacking in my life, but spent energy and time in filling others. In the past, I was consumed by my own stress, worry, and agony. I rarely understood what others might be going through. Now I have started seeing others stress filled faces, gestures, or behaviors. I can sense others discomfort because the intent has changed from filling the self to filling others. I have felt noble, beautiful, and peaceful for an extended period of time whenever I have practiced this intention.
The noble act of giving peace to others accumulates many blessings from others and increases our charitable (peace) account exponentially. Doctors sometimes end up saying everything medically possible has been done, and it is now up to God. It has been noted many times that people were miraculously saved from terminal illnesses or breezed through traumatic incidents. It is indeed the power accrued from these blessings that triggers the miracles to happen. Who would not want such miracles in their life? I highly recommend experimenting with this aim of giving peace to everyone and see how it fill our lives with boons.
Can inner peace really be abundant in a mostly negative world?
The journey of becoming peaceful is very rewarding, but can be very challenging. Our darkest vices, ugliest weaknesses, and unforeseen challenges in the form of sickness, relationship issues, or financial troubles come face to face. I have been confused, and gone into guilt many times during this journey. Luckily, I found a companion who never gave up on me, and was always there to guide me. His inspiring words have gotten me out of confusion, misery, and hopelessness innumerable times. The love I have felt from the companion has healed many self inflicted wounds, boosted my confidence, and shown me the path to live an elevated life. Everything I share in this blog are his teachings. He is the ocean of peace, the ever benevolent being, and none other than the Supreme being. The spiritual journey is challenging because the
spirit has lost its power due to the bad karma (actions) performed over many births. Inspite of having the knowledge of right and wrong karma, the soul fails to follow the right path. It gives into weaknesses easily and justifies its wrong behavior. We need power to change, and also a reliable soulmate who never gives up on us. Supreme being is the only one that does not come into the circle of life and death, and hence his powers and qualities never change. His noble qualities are constant and in abundance and hence is compared to an ocean. In Raja Yoga meditation, we connect to our real self and the Supreme being to charge ourselves with his powers and qualities. The color of his company makes us like him, and without even realizing our reservoir of inner peace starts to overflow. Are you ready to connect to the most peaceful being?
