Understanding the Real Self

Isn’t it an irony that we are looking for peace, love, and happiness everywhere when the reality is that it is within us? I had heard many times before that these virtues are within us, yet never fully realized it because I had not experienced it. Our end desire is not complicated, it is a simple wish to be content. Then, why is it so difficult to experience it? May be because we feel that doing things in the outside world of work, home, and relations will help us attain it. Is this method helping or is it only making us experience momentary peace, love, and happiness? Since we are unable to feel what we desire in any other way, we spend all our time, energy, and resources in the outside world. The real question is to check if that momentary experience of peace is satisfying us, and is that all we want from life? At Brahma Kumaris, I found out that peace can be experienced consistently for an extended period of time. I decided to investigate, and give the new method a try because

Overflowing Reservoir of Inner Peace

I recollect a story that relays the essence of this topic. God disguised himself and decided to visit his children in the physical world to check on them. He first reached a very wealthy man, Raju's house and knocked on the door. Raju angrily opened the door, gave God a penny and asked him to never come back again. God remembered how this same man visited temple many times few years back and begged for wealth. Raju possessed every comfort, but was not happy in sharing it with others. The lord thought he had not seen a more poor man than the wealthy Raju. Next, God stopped at a poor man, Shyam's hut and knocked on the door. The poor man smilingly invited God home and requested him to have meal with his family. God was touched by Shayam's genuine love. He knew Shyam's house that night barely had any food. Shyam's wife started serving dinner to God with lot of affection, and she noticed that food in the pot kept increasing every time she served. She realized that

Leak-Proof the Reservoir of Inner Peace

The word 'preserve' reminds me of my childhood days in India. We were taught to not waste many things like food, water, or money. The moment I would leave the tap running for an extra minute, someone would promptly remind or lecture me about the importance of conserving water. Surprisingly, I don't remember anyone talking about preserving peace. Infact people would even start yelling (loose their peace) if any of the other commodities were wasted. Now I wonder, why was I never reminded to preserve and protect peace. Are food, water, or money more valuable than peace? The most sorted out treasure in today's world is peace. Many conferences, unions, and committees have been established all over the globe for world peace. After so much effort, is the world a more peaceful place than before? I have heard many stories from my grand mother about their time and from those stories it feels like there was more peace few decades back. World has become peaceless because i

I recollect an insightful story that relays the message of this topic. A princess once lost her extremely valuable necklace. She looked for it everywhere for hours and did not find it. She assigned a troop of servants to look for it all over the palace and still no luck. She then sent an army of soldiers all over the kingdom, and still there was not trace of it. She was frustrated by the end of day that such a precious expensive gift from her dear father was lost. She was in the front of the mirror crying, and that’s when she noticed that the necklace was on her. She was wearing it all the time, but never bothered to check her neck. She was relieved but felt like a silly fool who ended up wasting not only her time and energy, but also others. Just like the princess, I would look for the valuable treasure peace in nature, music, and anywhere outside. I held mostly others responsible for my peaceless state and would expect them to fix it. At Brahma Kumaris , I was told that the virtue

Healing Everything Outside with Power Within

I recollect a story of a woodcutter that depicts the message of this topic really well. A very hard working woodcutter lived with his family in a village. He typically chopped 15-18 trees a day. His hard work allowed him to feed a family of four. Overtime, the man could only chop 10 trees even after putting in more hours at work. He started sleeping early to get enough rest, but after few weeks he could not even chop five trees in a day. His debts started increasing, body was hurting, and family was almost starving. One of the friends of the woodcutter inquired about his ill-health and misery. After hearing the story from the woodcutter, the friend advised him to get the axe sharpened. The woodcutter said he had no time to go to the city and get his axe sharpened. The friend felt compassion and hoped that the woodcutter got some good senses of taking care of things that were more important. Many times people say they have no time for taking care of the self because they have too ma

Empower Every Karma with Power Within

The topic of this article reminds me of an eye opening incident from a small orthopedic hospital in Gujrat, India. An earthquake was going to hit an area close to this hospital that was filled with  many physically disabled patients. The entire hospital had to be emptied within a few minutes. It was a scene of utter chaos and terror where everyone was running to save their lives. Some patients who could not even stand on their own feet were walking or running. The strong desire to live generated a will power in them, and that in turn invoked the physical strength. On the other hand few people were emotionally weak but had physical strength to move. The weak spirited ones felt so traumatized that inspite of having the ability to move, they couldn’t take a step forward. The lack of power within took away their physical strength. We spend so much of our time and energy in gaining physical, financial, or status power. The story clearly indicates that every power becomes meaningless, usel
